Touch of Summer

Although it's not too hot today, I put together my first summer outfit and my husband was kind enough to snap a few quick photos before dashing off to work. I'm trying to stick to my hot weather wardrobe resolutions.

This is the light denim vest that I talked about in that post. It is much thinner than any denim I've seen, but that is going to work in my favor so I'm keeping it. The skirt is linen, which I don't usually wear because wrinkles drive me crazy, but I took the leap and got this same skirt in yellow and navy blue. I've already worn the navy blue one twice this week, and it is very cool. It feels almost like I'm not wearing anything on bottom (I had to look down to make sure my skirt hadn't blown up a couple of times). I think they will be perfect for our weather, and I guess I will learn to deal with wrinkles. I'm working hard to put together some interesting, casual outfits to stave off the summer blahs, so comments and suggestions are of course, appreciated! : )

Blouse: Equipment
Denim Vest: Madewell
Skirt: J. Crew
Shoes: Bass
Clutch: Anthropologie

Ana! You look stunning ! Every piece is beautiful, and together they are stunning! I am very glad the skirt is such a hit. I have a denim vest just like that on my wish list and will have to check this one out.

How clever you are! It is not easy to dress well in warm weather. I love the combination of colors and the whimsical clutch.

  • Jem replied 12 years ago

Cute! I'm thinking that summer will be trickier to look stylish, but you have a great start to it!

So cute, Ana! I love the sweetness of the lace top against the more rugged vest. And the yellow skirt is so happy!

A very cute look on you! the lace top under the vest is really pretty and the color of the skirt is also lovely!

Perfect 10 from me! That bag is just adorable touch.

This is such a great outfit! I am a bit jealous of your warm weather. Love the juxtaposition of sunny yellow, feminine lace, and the denim vest.

Ana, this is just too perfectly summery. I've had that same experience with lightweight skirts that feel barely there. It certainly can cause momentary panic! :)

  • replied 12 years ago

Cool and breezy! I'm impressed with your resolutions. Does the vest add a bit more arm/shoulder coverage than the blouse does alone? All wovens, too. Good idea!

  • Jenava replied 12 years ago

This is agonizingly cute on you. So, so cute! I just think of wrinkles as part of the "linen look", kind of like distressing on jeans.

  • Sarah A replied 12 years ago

taking notes on your summer playbook! A totally fun and summery look, love it! The lace and denim is a wonderful foil.

Ana, your blog post on your resolutions for hot weather dressing plus the comments are a great help to me. Our summers are pretty much like yours except a bit shorter.
My list would include woven fabrics only (exception is nylon double layer to avoid see through), dresses that surrender the waist in a fabric heavy enough to not need a slip, the soaked and wrung out cotton scarves (I'll have to try freezing them) and a minimun of jewelry except earrings. I need to bare my shoulders and feet to feel cool even if it's not the best look for a 65 year old. I live in clam diggers and casual skirts with sleeveless scoopneck tops and use lightweight vests for layering.
Like AJ it gets really boring by July but then the sales begin and by then many pieces need to be replaced anyway. I consider most summer clothes disposable since they have to be washed so often. Only denim and nylon can last more than a season...well polyester too if you can stand to wear it when it's really hot.
A recent Wall Street Journal article on caring for your clothing mentioned that the key to crisp linen is to dry it completely, then iron it on both sides using spray starch. The author said she tried it and it worked. I've purged linen from my closet because of the wrinkles but may give it another chance.

Okay, this is a ridiculously cool outfit. I want this outfit. NOW!!! No seriously. You have an effortlessly cool style that I would love to copy (if that's possible). No lie! It's got that little bit of extra oomph/edgy/cool factor that I like.

SO cute Ana, I adore this outfit! The mix of lace/denim/almost-neon is superb. I'm bookmarking to remind myself of how to dress well when the hot weather hits (at the end of August -_-).

What a great little outfit - so sweet and summery! Love that Equipment blouse and I love the color of that skirt.

  • kellygirl replied 12 years ago

This is SO gorgeous, Ana! I'm bookmarking this too--the color, the denim, the lace. My goodness, you are positively glowing in this outfit!

  • ManidipaM replied 12 years ago

    WOW! You look STUNNING, Ana!

SO much to love in this look, but I find myself hyperventilating over the beauty of that lace blouse, so perfectly complimented by the sunny yellow skirt (daisies!) and the faded blue denim... And that CLUTCH! Oh my! Oh wow! Seriously envious.

Sorry for the late responses, everyone! I was out of the house last night and all day today. Phew!

Wow! Thank you so much for all the wonderful comments (I'm blushing)! I really appreciate it. You guys are fabulous! It was pretty hot yesterday (high 80s and humid), and I walked 3 miles in this outfit during the hottest part of the day and I felt pretty good. I still got really hot and sticky, but it wasn't too bad. Today was even hotter and I wore my navy skirt and felt good with a knit top tucked in. I'm going to keep an eye on the skirts and maybe pick the pink or ivory one up when they go on sale. It says "Dry Clean" on the tag, but I washed the navy one today and I'm currently letting it air dry. It seemed to come through just fine, no shrinking or fading. : )

Tanya, I really like this vest because it is so lightweight. Honestly, J. Crew has a much nicer quality one for only $10 more, but it was too long for me to wear with skirts and dresses, and it was also much heavier weight. I think this vest is fairly pricey for what it is, but it might be worth keeping an eye on it. There is also an ivory colored vest that is exactly the same. I had to size down one size for this one, so if I were you, I'd go with an x small or xx small if they have it.

Claire, it does provide more shoulder coverage than the top alone. The top has these kind of weird, big armholes and it cuts in really far in front and in back, so my bra straps show. :( But I love the lace patter and the collar and if I layer it under the vest, I don't have to wear a tank underneath the lace blouse. It's pretty breezy that way.

Joy, thank you so much for the tip on keeping linen crisp! I might give this a try. I like Jenava's way of thinking about wrinkles like distressing on denim. It's a "look" I'm trying to embrace.

SarahA, CitygirlDC, Aida, Kellygirl, ManidipaM, Joy, I'm so glad the blog post helped you! : ) Thank you so much! What a compliment!

Thank you again, everyone! I really love the supportive nature of this forum. I keep posting smiley faces, because I keep smiling at everyone's comments. : )

OMG, you look like a model for Anthro or Urban Outfitters or Free People - something free-spirited, hip and funky-cool. I adore the yellow and always admire your hair.
